- Families and consumers: Medical bills would no longer be listed as adverse information on consumer reports and could not be used to deny or limit credit, which aims to reduce credit penalties tied to health care costs.
- Creditors and lenders: Creditors would be prohibited from obtaining or using medical debt data when deciding whether to extend credit, using the bill’s definitions of “credit” and “creditor.”
- Regulators: The CFPB must amend 12 C.F.R. § 1022.30 (or a successor rule) within 1 year to implement the ban. The text includes no dedicated funding, sunset, or phase-in provision.

Ban medical debt in credit checks
If enacted, your medical debt would not appear as negative info on credit reports. Lenders would not be allowed to get or use medical-debt details when deciding to give you credit. “Medical debt” would include debts from medical services, products, or devices. The change would take effect at enactment, and the consumer watchdog would have 1 year to update its rules. This could help people with medical debt get fairer access to loans and credit cards.
