Easier Iowa certification for out-of-state medication aides

Beginning July 1, 2026, Iowa sets a clear path for medication aides certified in another state to get Iowa certification through department‑approved challenge exams. The law removes extra Iowa‑only steps, like needing prior Iowa employment. If you show written proof of your out‑of‑state certification, rules cannot add a separate nurse aide exam as a prerequisite. This makes it faster to qualify to work in Iowa facilities.

More testing sites and free exam proof

Starting July 1, 2026, more approved programs can give the medication aide challenge exam, not just area community colleges. If a written statement is needed to take the challenge exam instead of a course, approved programs beyond community colleges must accept it. The state also creates a free online registry where exam providers submit proof you passed, and no one pays a fee to submit or view it.

Old medication aide rules removed July 2026

On July 1, 2026, the state rescinds eleven listed administrative rules on medication aide training and qualifications. The code editor removes that language from the Iowa Administrative Code as soon as possible after that date. This clears older or conflicting text so the new certification rules can apply.
