Monthly tax money for housing and shelters
Beginning September 1, 2026, Maine splits real estate transfer tax money each month to support housing and shelters. At the start of each fiscal year, the Maine State Housing Authority (MSHA) certifies the amount needed to pay its bonds. The state subtracts that amount, then pays out the rest monthly. 18% goes to DHHS for the Housing First Fund. 32% goes to MSHA for the Housing Opportunities for Maine Fund. 30% goes to MSHA for the Housing Production Fund to support low‑income housing tax credits, rural rentals, and affordable homeownership. 18% goes to the General Fund. 2% goes to MSHA’s shelter operating subsidy program for emergency shelters. For fiscal year 2026-27, MSHA also receives $1,012,617 for the shelter operating subsidy program.
