More transport firms face state property assessment

The law expands who is treated as state‑assessed for Tennessee property tax. It covers motor bus and truck companies that run commercial vehicles only for hire and have U.S. Department of Transportation registration through Tennessee or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The company must be based in Tennessee or own or lease property in Tennessee. It includes owner‑operators working under the carrier’s authority. Towing companies are not included. It also covers passenger transit that mainly runs in tunnels, when the company owns and runs the tunnels and stations and owns, uses, or leases the vehicles for that service. The law takes effect immediately.

Extra filings for tunnel transit companies

Subsurface passenger transit companies must file more detail for property tax. They must list all tangible personal property they own, use, or lease for operations. They must describe each tunnel and station, with the location and miles of tunnel. They must report total direct and indirect costs to place the company in operation. They must also provide any other information the Tennessee comptroller reasonably requires. The law takes effect immediately.
