New grants for volunteer fire and rescue

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee provides two yearly grant programs run by the Department of Commerce and Insurance. Recognized volunteer fire departments can get grants for firefighting gear and training, or to meet local matches for federal grants. Eligible rescue squads can get grants to buy firefighting and rescue equipment. Grants cannot pay for vehicles, like fire trucks. For the volunteer fire program, the department tries to split money across the three grand divisions based on how many recognized departments are in each. The commissioner sets selection rules, awards and pays the grants, unspent funds stay available for later years, and lawmakers intend to fund the programs each year in the state budget.
