Beginning July 1, 2026, auto shops can store a vehicle for repair without written storage permission if they try in good faith to get the owner’s OK to repair and send a three‑day delivery notice to the last known registered owner. A shop can enforce a lien 30 days after the owner receives that notice. To prove compliance, the shop must give the Tennessee Department of Revenue a signed record of the attempt to notify and verifiable proof the notice was delivered, such as an e‑signature or a delivery photo. When a vehicle is stored for repair, some standard notice rules do not apply if the owner approved the repair and was told it is finished, or if the shop could not get approval but followed the good‑faith and notice steps.
