Utah creates a fund to help erase unpaid school meal bills. The State Board of Education collects debt data from each school district by June 30 and verifies it. After it receives money, the Board pays schools based on their share of statewide debt and finishes by September 1 each year. Schools must use the money only to pay meal debt. Any funds not used in 60 days go back for redistribution. The law takes effect May 6, 2026.
You can choose to donate on your Utah income tax return to help pay school meal debt. Residents and nonresidents who file a Utah return can give. Each year, the Tax Commission sends all donations to the State Board of Education by August 15. This option applies for taxable years that begin on or after January 1, 2026.
If a donation line on the Utah tax return raises under $30,000 a year for three straight years, the Tax Commission can remove it. Removal starts two tax years after that three-year period. The Commission must report the change by the November interim meeting and publish a notice within 30 days. This rule also applies to the school meals donation option.
