New gold backed payment option in Utah

Beginning May 6, 2026, the State Treasurer hires vendors to run an electronic payment system. It is backed by physical gold or silver stored in Utah vaults. The system lets participants redeem physical metal and allows the state to make payments. Vendors are chosen through an RFP that weighs security, efficiency, and cost, and the contract requires a public, law‑compliant system. No contractor or state agency must use it, and the state may keep other payment methods. When you get a payment or redeem metal through the system, you must pay any transaction or redemption fees. The Treasurer consults the State Tax Commission, studies paying state employees through the system, and files a yearly report.

Utah may invest reserves in gold

Beginning May 6, 2026, the State Treasurer may put part of four named reserve accounts into physical gold or silver. Any single purchase cannot be more than 10% of that account’s money at the time of purchase. Money not in metals stays invested under the State Money Management Act. Delivery, vaulting, and other admin costs are taken from the metals earnings before the funds are credited.
