Beginning May 6, 2026, if your plan makes you pick a primary care provider, you can pick a participating physician assistant. The PA must have trained in a primary care doctor’s office, finished Utah’s collaboration requirement, and agree to treat you. Your insurer must clearly list your choices in the policy. Your plan cannot charge higher premiums, copays, or other extra costs because of your choice under this law. Some plans may also let you pick a participating physical therapist for therapy, within the therapist’s legal scope.
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah treats services by licensed physician assistants as primary health care. Plans and state programs that use the state’s definition must treat PA services as primary care. This can make it easier to get covered care from a PA.
