Beginning May 6, 2026, to be a certified food safety manager, you must pass a department‑approved exam and send proof to your local health department. You must renew every five years, and you have 30 days to file your renewal paperwork after you finish the steps. Local health departments cannot charge a fee to accept or process your documents and must allow mail, email, or in‑person submissions. Only certified people may use the title “certified food safety manager.” Local health departments may suspend or revoke certification, or require extra training, for false information, repeated violations, or creating a health hazard. The department sets uniform statewide standards and exam criteria and approves exams.
Beginning May 6, 2026, food businesses the department classifies as lowest risk by rule are exempt from core requirements. Nonprofit fundraisers are exempt when a food establishment donates the food and a certified manager from that business stays on site. For those events, the department cannot require extra training, fees, or testing just because of the donation. Charities that give free food to disadvantaged groups are exempt if they follow department rules, and the department may add requirements for these charities by rule. These exemptions do not remove other state food safety laws.
