4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
Beginning May 6, 2026, if your stolen vehicle, vessel, or outboard motor is found, you must tell the police agency where you filed the report. That agency must then tell the state Criminal Investigations and Technical Services Division.
Beginning May 6, 2026, owners and lienholders can report a stolen vehicle, vessel, or outboard motor to the police where the theft happened. Cities and counties cannot make you wait or add extra steps like certified letters, notarization, or supervisor sign-off. This bar on local limits does not apply to vehicles under a written rental agreement.
Beginning May 6, 2026, you can report a vehicle, vessel, or outboard motor taken by embezzlement only after a warrant is issued for the person charged.
Beginning May 6, 2026, a "written rental agreement" means a contract that lists a return time and the authorized driver. A city or county may make you wait up to 48 hours after the return time before taking a stolen-vehicle report for a rental. They may require proof: ownership or lawful possession, the agreement and end time, that the car was not returned or extended, and attempts to reach the renter. But they cannot delay a report if you show evidence of theft, like an unauthorized user, fraud, refusal to return, criminal use, or other facts showing intent to keep the car. Taking a payment after the return time alone does not block you from reporting the car as stolen.
