Beginning May 6, 2026, the Department of Corrections creates a Reentry Division to support people leaving prison. It provides screening, individualized case plans, evidence-based treatment, education and job readiness, and links to housing and support services. With your permission, release planning can include family or friends. After the department starts its digital inmate communications program, it must add a secure attorney-client portal within 12 months to share messages and legal documents.
The law helps people in prison or county jail get a driver license, driver license certificate, or state ID before release. Starting May 6, 2026, the Department of Corrections ensures you meet with the Driver License Division in your last 7 days before release, provides needed papers, and gives a payment voucher up to the cost of an original Class D application. Beginning July 1, 2026, county jails must check inmates sentenced 6 months or more for a current ID and, if you accept help, set up a meeting and give the same voucher. Jails and the department can arrange a temporary ID while you gather documents. These ID services do not apply if you are not a U.S. citizen or not lawfully authorized to work.
If you are on probation or parole and in treatment, your program must give your drug-test results to your supervising officer or DOC treatment staff when asked, but only if you sign a waiver that follows federal privacy law. When drug testing is a condition of parole, the Board requires you to sign that waiver. These rules improve supervision and treatment coordination but reduce privacy for those test results.
