Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah hospitals must run a workplace violence reporting system, with policies in place by November 1, 2026. The system records employee-reported incidents and bans retaliation against staff who report or help in an investigation. It collects the date and time, a short description, the victim’s job, who the offender was (patient, visitor, or employee), and the immediate response. Hospitals must explain the system to all staff, set when to alert security or police, and use the data to improve training and prevention. They must keep incident records at least two years, send quarterly summaries to the chief medical and nursing officers, and file a yearly incident count with the state.
The law repeals two specific criminal-code subsections on set dates. Subsection 76-5-102.7(2)(b) ends on January 1, 2027. Subsection 76-11-218(10) ends on December 31, 2031. These changes adjust legal rules but do not create new payments or fees for households.
