An intern veterinary license lasts only as long as needed to finish required clinical training. After you finish the minimum supervised training, it can run up to one year. The board may allow more time if you show reasonable progress toward passing the exam or toward licensure. It can never run more than two years after you finished the minimum supervised training. This starts May 6, 2026.
To get a Utah veterinary license, you must pass a board‑approved exam and meet education rules. You also must show at least 1,000 hours of qualifying practice. Hours can be under a Utah‑licensed vet, in similar investigational, educational, or sanitary work, as a licensed vet outside Utah, or while employed as a vet by the U.S. or the state. This applies starting May 6, 2026.
You must pay fees to take the exam, get your first veterinary license, and renew it. The Department of Commerce sets the amounts under state budgeting law. This starts May 6, 2026.
All changes in this act take effect May 6, 2026. The new experience rules, intern limits, and fees apply on that date.
