4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.

New standard coordinates for Utah surveys

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah adopts the National Geodetic Survey Utah Plane Coordinate System, including the 2022 State Plane system; 1927 and 1983 references stay valid. Zones come from NGS. Coordinates use x/y in the system’s official units and must match NGS values. Boundary points rely on monumented control stations that meet FGCC standards; after June 30, 2026, NGS‑published stations may link surveys to land descriptions. Maps and surveys must name the coordinate system and units; “modified” systems must say so and show the adjustment factor. Values must reference the current NSRS and include metadata for the system and bearing; other datums are allowed only if fully documented. If a tract crosses zones, you may use either zone but must name it.

Coordinates valid, but not for deeds alone

Beginning May 6, 2026, a survey or corner described with the Utah Plane Coordinate System is legally valid. These coordinates add to monuments and recorded land lines; they do not replace them. For sales or title transfers, you cannot describe property by coordinates alone. If coordinates conflict with a U.S. Public Land Survey description, the PLSS description controls.

New rules for engineer and surveyor licenses

Beginning May 6, 2026, applicants for engineer or land surveyor licenses must use the division’s form and pay a set fee. For land surveyors, you can qualify by: associate + 6 years’ experience; bachelor’s + 4 years; high school + 10 years; or holding a U.S. license with at least three years of practice. For licensure by endorsement, you must hold a current license in good standing, pass an approved exam, and show full‑time principal work for five of the last seven years. The division sets details by rule under the Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act.

Old coordinate law section repealed

On May 6, 2026, the law repeals Utah Code 57-10-11. This removes that section from state law; the practical effects are mainly administrative.
