Yearly boat safety course and proof

Beginning January 1, 2027, anyone operating a motorboat or sailboat must complete a state safety course each calendar year. The Division of Outdoor Recreation runs the course and keeps it under 20 minutes on average. It covers life jackets, boating under the influence, safe driving and navigation, and aquatic invasive species. After you finish, you receive proof that expires the day after December 31 of that year. You must carry current-year proof while operating, unless you are renting and received a livery safety briefing. Operating without proof is an infraction. This course does not replace the separate personal watercraft (jet ski) course.

Boat rental shops must verify or brief

Beginning January 1, 2027, rental shops (liveries) may not rent a watercraft unless the renter shows current-year course proof or the shop gives a safety briefing first. The Division of Outdoor Recreation makes rules for this briefing after notifying the commission. The briefing covers the same safety topics suited for rentals. If a renter lacks proof, the shop must give the briefing before renting.
