4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.
Beginning May 6, 2026, health plans in the individual or large-group market that started or renewed on or after Jan 1, 2020 must cover autism diagnosis and treatment. Plans must cover at least 600 hours a year of behavioral treatment; for plans issued or renewed on or after Jan 1, 2020, there may be no yearly hour limit. Plans must include board‑certified behavior analysts and qualified mental health providers in network. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and any limits for autism care must match those for other illnesses. The Insurance Commissioner sets minimum coverage standards by rule.
On July 1, 2027, the state repeals its ground ambulance reimbursement section. Billing and coverage for ambulance rides can change after that date. The impact on your costs depends on your insurer and ambulance provider.
Beginning May 6, 2026, when autism treatment starts, the provider must send a treatment plan to the insurer within 14 business days. Insurers can request a treatment review only once every three months. If the insurer stops treatment after a review, you can ask for an external review.
On July 1, 2033, the state repeals its rule on coordinating with other states. This removes that legal coordination tool. Any household effects are indirect and depend on how agencies and insurers used the old rule.
