Utah sets a list of state holy days, like Holi, Lunar New Year, Good Friday, Easter, Eid al-Fitr, Passover, Vesak Day, Eid al-Adha, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, and Christmas. A state holy day is not a paid legal holiday unless the law also names it one. The list guides scheduling and leave decisions across the state.
Each state employee gets one extra Personal Preference Day. The Division of Human Resource Management sets the rules for using it. State and local governments must give high priority to approving personal leave on listed state holy days. This makes it easier to take time off to observe your faith.
Beginning with the 2027–28 school year, districts, charter schools, and colleges must try to set breaks on Good Friday and listed state holy days. This applies when they set their academic calendars and is limited by operational needs. Families and students who observe those days get better calendar alignment.
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah recognizes Good Friday as a state legal holiday. State employees who get paid legal holidays receive four hours of paid time on Good Friday, not eight. This formalizes the holiday but limits paid time to a half day.
