Beginning July 1, 2026, the State Board can give first-come, first-served grants to districts that show need to carry out these plans. Money can buy AEDs, replace pads and batteries, and pay for CPR and first aid training and materials. High-needs schools (Title I or 50%+ free or reduced-price lunch) get priority. Districts may accept gifts and in-kind donations for FDA-approved AEDs, upkeep, and staff training. For FY 2027 (July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027), the law provides a one-time $200,000 appropriation to the State Board for contracts and grants. The board may set rules for applications, awards, and compliance.
Beginning July 1, 2026, every public school must have a cardiac emergency response plan that uses evidence-based steps. Each school must place an AED on site or on school property, with signs, kept unlocked, and reachable and usable within three minutes. Schools must choose staff, like teachers, nurses, or athletic trainers, to complete first aid, CPR, and AED training. Districts must test and maintain AEDs per the maker’s instructions. Schools must tell local EMS the AED type and exact location.
