Beginning July 1, 2026, if a student is under 18 and data go to someone else, the school must get the parent’s consent. The same consent protections and limits apply to the parent.
Starting July 1, 2026, if a third party gets data for more than 10 students, it must follow state student‑privacy rules. If a third party breaks the law and shares your data, you can sue that third party. You cannot sue the school under this rule.
Beginning July 1, 2026, you can access your school records and let others access them. Schools may share your data only with your informed, written consent, unless federal law already allows the disclosure. The recipient must agree to use it only as allowed and not re‑share it. Educational data includes transcripts, enrollment, course history, and credentials. You can review details and revoke consent anytime. Schools cannot bundle unrelated terms or block or delay your consent. Starting July 1, 2027, schools use a secure digital consent tool; written consent is still allowed if digital access is not reasonable. The state board may issue best‑practice guidance.
Starting July 1, 2026, schools can set reasonable time or session limits on how you access your data. They must tell you about any limit when they grant access. They must also provide a reasonable way for you to get access again after the limit ends.
