24/7 SafeUT crisis help for schools

Beginning May 6, 2026, the Huntsman Mental Health Institute runs the SafeUT Crisis Line. People can anonymously report school threats, bullying, harassment, hazing, or abuse by a school employee or volunteer. The line gives 24/7 crisis help, including suicide prevention. When needed or required by law, reports go quickly to school officials and police. The institute also reports uses to state investigation systems and works with the state security chief to decide when to report. School boards must tell students, parents, and staff about SafeUT, and the commission and the State Board of Education promote awareness. The SafeUT app is available in multiple languages, including Spanish.

New SafeUT school safety commission

Beginning May 6, 2026, the law creates the SafeUT and School Safety Commission. Members include leaders from the Attorney General’s office, K–12, higher education, health, law enforcement, one House member, one Senator, Huntsman staff, a youth expert, and two public members. The Attorney General’s designee chairs the commission and sets the agenda. A simple majority makes a quorum, and actions need a majority of a quorum. Members serve staggered four-year terms, and vacancies are filled for the rest of the term. The Attorney General’s office provides staff support.

SafeUT fees allowed for colleges

Beginning May 6, 2026, the Huntsman Mental Health Institute may charge a fee to colleges or other entities for using SafeUT. It cannot charge the State Board of Education or local education agencies. The commission sets a standard way to calculate any fees.

No pay for commission members

Beginning May 6, 2026, most commission members do not get pay, per diem, benefits, or travel expenses. Legislator members are paid under existing law and legislative rules.
