New rules for school board officers

Beginning May 6, 2026, local school boards follow standard officer rules. Boards elect a president and a vice president to two-year terms, serving until successors are chosen. Boards hold these elections at the first January meeting after a regular board election. An officer may be removed for cause by a two-thirds vote. If a vacancy occurs, the board elects a replacement to finish the term. A simple majority of members is a quorum.

Start-up officer terms for new districts

Beginning May 6, 2026, new school district boards can set initial officer terms. For the president and vice president, the board may choose one of two options. Option 1: the rest of the year sworn in, plus one year. Option 2: the rest of the year sworn in, plus three years. This applies only to the first terms in a new district.
