4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, districts must allow device use to handle an imminent health or safety threat, a school‑wide emergency, to contact the SafeUT Crisis Line, when listed in a student’s IEP or Section 504 plan, or for a medical need. Districts must also let parents request a brief device‑use window in a designated area during non‑instructional time. Ask your school how to make a request and what proof is needed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, students may not use cellphones, smart watches, or similar personal devices at school during school hours. School hours run from the first bell to the last bell, including class time, lunch, recess, and passing time. Local districts set the day‑to‑day rules and list any allowed uses.
Beginning July 1, 2026, your district may allow device use in more situations than the state minimum, or it may add tighter limits. Districts can extend limits to lunch, passing periods, other supervised activities, or beyond the school day. The State Board of Education can publish model rules for districts to use. Check your district’s policy to see what applies at your school.
Beginning July 1, 2026, the ban covers any device that acts like or extends a cellphone, including smart watches. School‑issued or school‑required devices are not covered. Wearables that only tell time, track health, show alerts without replies, or only track location are not covered. This helps families know which items are allowed at school.
