Opioid risk talk before first two prescriptions
Prescribers must talk with you before the first opioid prescription, and again before the second, in the same treatment. This covers Schedule II drugs and other opioid pain relievers for acute or chronic pain. They must explain why it is needed, other options, and risks like addiction and deadly breathing problems from misuse or mixing. If you are under 18 and not emancipated, they must include your parent or guardian; caregivers may receive the talk when appropriate. They must record the talk in your chart; the rule does not apply in licensed hospice or terminal palliative care.
