Sales tax break for contract research

The law lets Wisconsin contract research firms buy research machinery, equipment, and items consumed or destroyed in research without sales or use tax. You qualify when you do research for a customer that would count as qualified research under federal rules if done by the customer’s employees. Research paid for by a related group member and paid contract research also counts as qualified research. Providers doing this work in Wisconsin are eligible for the exemption. The change takes effect on the first day of the third month after publication.
