How event sponsorship money can be used
You must spend sponsorship money only on the approved project to attract or host a major event in Wisconsin. The agency may also sponsor non‑public events if it finds they bring national exposure or big statewide or regional growth. It gives extra weight to events in the tourist offseason or during economic need. No funds under this non‑public rule can go to events that are regularly scheduled in Wisconsin or rotate within the state. In any fiscal year, no more than 25% of program funds can support these non‑public initiatives.
New event sponsorship rules and match
The program now uses sponsorships, not grants. The state’s economic development agency sets a standard application and required info. Before any award, it must estimate direct and indirect benefits and do a cost‑benefit analysis. You must secure nonstate cash or in‑kind contributions equal to the award (a 1:1 match) before the agency can sponsor you. By October 1 each year, the agency reports on each sponsorship from the prior fiscal year.
