School buses can add side back-up lights
School buses may add one extra back-up lamp on each side. Each side lamp must shine white or amber at the rear wheels while backing. These are in addition to the up to two back-up lamps allowed for motor vehicles. This helps drivers see the rear wheels when reversing.
Limits on vehicle back-up lights
Most motor vehicles can have no more than two back-up lamps. They must shine white or amber to the rear. The beam must not light more than 75 feet behind the vehicle. School buses have a separate exception.
