Grants cover half pay for one county forester
Counties with lands in the county forest program can get a state grant for one county forest administrator or assistant. The grant pays up to 50% of that forester’s salary and up to 50% of fringe benefits, but paid benefits cannot be more than 40% of the salary. The person must manage the county forest program and meet one of three paths: a forestry bachelor’s from a school accredited by the Society of American Foresters (or an equivalent degree), a natural resources bachelor’s plus 3 or more years managing a county forest, or a forestry associate degree plus 3 or more years. The person cannot be a Department of Natural Resources employee. The law takes effect January 1, 2025. Grant applications submitted on that date use these rules.
