Nurse prescribers can pronounce deaths
Advanced practice nurse prescribers can now pronounce a patient’s death for the death record. They must be certified to issue prescriptions under state law and must have directly cared for the patient. The pronouncement must follow accepted medical standards. The legal definition of the “date of death” now includes when these nurse prescribers, as well as other listed clinicians, pronounce death. This authority applies except where paragraph (cm) of the law limits it.
