The Secretary of Defense can give a person who signs the special agreement to join the program a joining bonus of up to $100,000. That bonus is paid on top of any other pay or benefits they get. If the person does not follow the agreement or does not start or finish the required active-duty service, they must pay the bonus back under the repayment rules in 37 U.S.C. 303a(e) or 373.
