Title 20 › Chapter CHAPTER 70— - STRENGTHENING AND IMPROVEMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER IV— - 21ST CENTURY SCHOOLS › Part Part A— - Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants › Subpart subpart 1— - student support and academic enrichment grants › § 7117
Local school districts or groups of districts that get money under this program must use some of it to create and run programs that help students get a well-rounded education. These programs must work with other schools and community services. They can team up with colleges, businesses, nonprofits, community groups, or other groups that have shown they can make these programs work. Examples of allowed programs include college and career counseling (like learning about college and careers, training counselors to use job market data, and teaching financial aid and budgeting), arts and music to boost engagement and problem solving, STEM programs that expand access for underrepresented students through grade 12 (for example girls, minority students, English learners, students with disabilities, and low-income students), hands-on STEM learning and competitions, new STEM-focused schools, and better coordination between school and after-school programs. Other options are accelerated learning supports (including paying some exam fees for low-income students and expanding dual enrollment and early college options), teaching American history and civics, foreign languages, environmental education, volunteerism, interdisciplinary programs, and similar activities. For fiscal year 2017, districts may use funds to pay part or all accelerated-exam fees for low-income students who took exams in the 2016–2017 school year.
