Only applications that meet this absolute priority will be considered.
Who Can Receive a Fellowship
To receive a fellowship, a faculty member must be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident; be employed by an institution of higher education; have taught relevant foreign language or area studies for the two years immediately before the award; propose research that is not dissertation research for a doctoral degree; and possess sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the proposed research.
Extra Review Points for Priority Topics and Institutions
The Department will award additional competitive preference points: +1 point for projects focusing on less commonly taught modern foreign languages (not French, German, or Spanish); +2 points for projects with certain thematic academic focuses (e.g., science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computer science, education, public health, economics, etc.); and +3 points for projects implemented by community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges or Universities, or other defined minority-serving institutions. Applications can earn up to 6 additional points in total.
No Cost Sharing; $100 Admin Allowance
The FRA program does not require cost sharing or matching from grantees, and the Secretary awards institutions an administrative allowance of $100 for each fellowship listed in the grant award document (per 34 CFR 663.30(d)).
Application Dates and Electronic Submission
Applications are available January 8, 2024, and must be transmitted by March 10, 2025, electronically through G6 by 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline date. The notice describes G6 hours of operation and provides procedures for limited paper submissions and deadline extensions if G6 is unavailable for 60 minutes or more during specified hours.
