Florida seeks emergency use of clothianidin
The Florida Department of Agriculture asked EPA for a specific exemption to apply the pesticide clothianidin as a soil drench on up to 75,000 acres of immature (3–5 year old) citrus trees from April 16, 2025 to April 16, 2026. The proposal would allow no more than two applications per 12-month period at a maximum rate of 0.4 lb active ingredient per acre (24.0 fl. oz/acre), with up to 14,943 lbs. active ingredient used on the full 75,000 acres. The applicant says the use is needed to suppress Huanglongbing (HLB) disease and prevent significant economic losses to Florida citrus growers.
Stakeholders can comment by January 29, 2025
EPA is asking for public comment on the Florida request and will accept comments through January 29, 2025 via docket EPA-HQ-OPP-2024-0629 at https://www.regulations.gov. The notice tells stakeholders (for example crop producers, food manufacturers, and pesticide manufacturers) how to submit comments and cautions not to send Confidential Business Information through the public docket.
EPA requests environmental justice information
EPA asks the public to provide information on any groups, including minority and low-income populations, who may have atypical or disproportionately high adverse human health or environmental impacts from exposure to clothianidin. The Agency explicitly seeks information about location, cultural practices, or other factors that could cause disproportionate impacts.
