Notice

Summary

The Tennessee Valley Authority got a special one-time pass to let workers at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, Unit 2, work longer hours than usual for up to 21 days between January 6 and January 31, 2025. This helps keep the plant running smoothly without extra costs or delays. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave the green light on December 23, 2024.

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

One-time 21-day work-hour exemption

The NRC granted TVA a one-time exemption allowing certain Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, Unit 2, personnel to use less restrictive outage work-hour rules for up to 21 days starting no earlier than January 6, 2025 and no later than January 31, 2025. While the exemption is in effect, specified workers must have at least 3 days off in each successive 15-day period (or 1 day off in any 7-day period for another category) and the exemption ends at the earlier of the approved 21-day period or when the unit is connected to the electrical grid.

Supports local electricity reliability

The exemption lets TVA complete a planned maintenance window at Sequoyah Unit 2 between January 6 and January 31, 2025, for up to 21 days, which the NRC staff found may help the unit return to service sooner. The NRC noted that finishing the work earlier may help TVA meet elevated electrical demand and avoid buying replacement power, which could affect reliability for communities served by the plant.
