Iowa-Nebraska Gas Pipeline Seeks Public Environmental Input

Published Date: 5/29/2026

Notice

Summary

Northern Natural Gas Company wants to expand its pipeline in parts of Iowa and Nebraska, and the government is asking people to share their thoughts on how this might affect the environment. If you live in those counties, now’s your chance to speak up before June 22, 2026. This project could change local landscapes and might involve big construction, so your input helps decide if it moves forward.

Analyzed Economic Effects

5 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Easement and eminent domain risk

If you are a landowner in the project area in Iowa or Nebraska, Northern may contact you to negotiate an easement to build, operate, and maintain the pipeline, but you are not required to agree. If the Commission approves the project, the company could initiate condemnation (eminent domain) proceedings and compensation would be determined by a judge under state law.

Land disturbance and permanent footprint

Construction of the project would disturb about 529.8 acres of land and Northern would permanently maintain about 160.7 acres for operation of the facilities. About 32.1% of the proposed pipeline routes would parallel existing pipeline, utility, or road rights-of-way.

Public comment window opens

If you live in the project area in Iowa or Nebraska, you can submit written comments to FERC about environmental issues. FERC must receive comments by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on June 22, 2026, and you may file by eComment, eFiling, or mailed paper copy (Docket No. CP26-241-000).

NEPA review will assess many impacts

FERC staff will prepare an environmental document (an Environmental Assessment or Environmental Impact Statement) and will evaluate impacts on geology and soils; water resources and wetlands; vegetation and wildlife; threatened and endangered species; cultural resources; land use; air quality and noise; and reliability and safety. Your scoping comments will help FERC decide which issues to analyze in that document.

Added natural gas capacity announced

Northern says the project would provide about 535,360 dekatherms per day (Dth/day) in winter and about 525,026 Dth/day in summer to serve residential, commercial, and industrial customer market growth in its Market Area. The expansion includes pipelines, a 20,500-horsepower compressor station near Clarion, Iowa, and other aboveground facilities.
