NJ Transit Safety Waiver Extension

NJ Transit (NJT) petitioned the Federal Railroad Administration to extend a waiver so its River Line light rail (about 34 miles between Camden and Trenton, New Jersey, using diesel-electric railcars) would continue to be relieved from compliance with many FRA safety rules. NJT requests partial relief from parts 221, 223, 234, and 236 and full relief from parts 219, 222, 231, 239, 242, 243, and 270, and additionally seeks new full relief from parts 229 and 238. FRA will consider public comments on the petition received by August 10, 2026.
