NIOSH HHE Program Continues

NIOSH will continue collecting information to support Health Hazard Evaluations (HHEs) that identify chemical, biological, or physical hazards in workplaces. The agency receives about 250 HHE requests per year, and about 25% of those requests lead to on-site evaluations.

Respondent Time Burden Estimated

Responding to NIOSH HHE forms and follow-up questionnaires imposes time costs totaling an estimated 1,745 burden hours per year. Typical items include a 12-minute request form, 15-minute interviews, 30-minute questionnaires, short contact cards (5 minutes), and follow-back surveys of 10–20 minutes.

Limited Medical Testing with Consent

A very small number of on-site HHEs (about two, under 1%) will involve medical tests or collection of biological samples that require written informed consent. The informed consent process takes about 30 minutes and employees may decline to participate.

Exposure Monitoring and Result Notices

About 70% of on-site evaluations include personal exposure monitoring; NIOSH estimates about 25 employees are monitored per site. Employees offered monitoring can complete a contact postcard (about 5 minutes) to receive their exposure results.

Request Form Available in Many Languages

The HHE request form is available in printed English and Spanish, and online in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Mixteco, Tagalog, and Vietnamese, allowing non-English speakers to submit requests via the website.
