FAA Grants Airports Staffing Relief Through 2027
Published Date: 6/23/2026
Notice
Summary
The FAA is extending special staffing relief at Ronald Reagan Washington National, JFK, and LaGuardia airports through October 30, 2027. This means airlines won’t have to use all their scheduled takeoff and landing slots during busy winter and summer seasons, helping manage air traffic despite controller shortages. This change keeps flights running smoother without extra costs or penalties for airlines during these tough staffing times.
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.
Slot-Usage Waiver Extended to Oct 30, 2027
The FAA extended a limited waiver of the slot-usage rules at Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), John F. Kennedy (JFK), and LaGuardia (LGA) through October 30, 2027. Carriers may return up to 10% of their slots for the Winter 2026/2027 season (Oct 25, 2026–Mar 27, 2027) and Summer 2027 season (Mar 28, 2027–Oct 30, 2027) without the usual penalties, effective June 23, 2026.
Deadlines and Conditions for Returning Slots
Airlines must return specific slots by August 15, 2026 to get relief for Winter 2026/2027 and by January 15, 2027 to get relief for Summer 2027. Returned slots that meet the notice conditions will be treated as 'used' for the waiver period; FAA will not reallocate temporarily returned slots at JFK and LGA, while returned DCA slots may be used on an ad hoc basis by other carriers without historic precedence.
DCA Relief Tied to NYC Operations; Regional Connections Encouraged
Relief at DCA is available only for flights that are impacted by operations to or from JFK or LGA. FAA also expects carriers to up-gauge aircraft where possible and to maintain connections to regional airports to support continuous interstate air service for small communities and isolated areas. FAA identifies peak delay windows as JFK 13:00–22:59 and LGA 13:00–21:59 (local time).
