Texas SNAP: Ban on Sugary Drinks and Candy
The State of Texas will amend the SNAP definition of food to exclude "sweetened drinks and candy," meaning SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy those items in Texas. FNA approved the state's request on August 4, 2025, and the State requested to implement the project on April 1, 2026.
Certain Drinks Kept Eligible for SNAP
Texas clarified on January 23, 2026 that naturally sweetened beverages and medical-grade electrolyte drinks remain eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits. This modification was submitted after the state's initial request and is part of the project's scope as posted by FNA.
