Sponsored By: Senator Braun, Mike [R-IN]
Became Law
Summary
Retroactive SSDI access for people with ALS ties eligibility to the date a Social Security disability approval is issued rather than the date an application was filed. The amendment to the ALS Disability Insurance Access Act of 2019 makes approvals dated after the day five months before enactment eligible for retroactive benefits.

Earlier SSDI back pay for ALS
The law fixes the ALS SSDI rule. Your benefit timing is based on the approval date, not the day you filed. It covers approvals after the date that is 5 months before this law was enacted. The change applies as if it were part of the 2019 ALS law. If your approval falls in that window, your start date can be earlier and you can get more back pay.
