Became Law
Summary
Excludes approved security space and security costs from how Senate office square footage and rents are calculated. This law amends 2 U.S.C. 6317 so portions of office space used for approved security or safety enhancements and separately itemized security costs do not count toward aggregate square feet or the annual rental rate when authorized by the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration and approved by the Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper of the Senate.

- Senate offices: Approved security areas and separately itemized security costs are excluded from aggregate square-foot counts and from the annual rental rate calculation, which changes how office space totals and rent are measured.
- Property owners and lessors: Security-related expenses must be itemized and approved by the Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper to be excluded from rental-rate calculations.
- Senate security officials and the Rules Committee: The committee defines authorized security features, with examples including an information technology security closet, a secure lobby, guard services, access control, and facility monitoring, and the Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper must approve specific items for exclusion.

Security costs excluded from Senate rent
The law changes how Senate office rent is counted. Space used for security, like an IT security closet or a secure lobby, does not count toward square-foot limits. Security costs, like guard services, access control, and monitoring, do not count toward the annual rent rate. The Senate Rules Committee must authorize the measures, and the Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper must approve them and the itemized costs. These rules apply now.
