Summer reading grants at meal sites
This bill would create a competitive federal grant program to help State library agencies fund summer reading programs at schools that run summer lunch sites. It would authorize $5,000,000 a year for fiscal years 2027 through 2031, subject to annual appropriations. Eligible local school districts would need to run summer meals and have at least 50 percent of pre-K through grade 3 students reading below or at risk of reading below grade 3. Grants would fund programs of at least 6 weeks that keep school libraries open, run reading activities, train staff, and require yearly progress reports.
