La Paz County can buy federal land
The law lets the Interior Department sell about 3,400 acres of federal land to La Paz County after the County asks. The transfer can move ahead without the usual federal land-use planning steps. The County must pay the fair market value, based on a federal appraisal, and cover all survey and administrative costs. The Secretary leaves out parcels with important cultural, environmental, wildlife, or recreation resources, honors valid existing rights, and may set other terms. The County and later owners must avoid disturbing Tribal artifacts, work with the Colorado River Indian Tribes, and allow nearby reburying if items are found. The federal land is withdrawn from new mining claims and mineral leasing, and sale money goes to the Federal Land Disposal Account.
