Limits on opioids in poppy seeds
This bill would direct Health and Human Services to set safety limits for morphine, codeine, and other alkaloids on poppy seeds. HHS would propose a rule within 1 year and finalize it within 2 years. If enacted, seeds above those limits would be treated as adulterated food and could not be sold in interstate commerce. The bill also says contaminated seeds could still be regulated under federal drug laws. If passed, sellers would need to meet the limits, and consumers could see safer poppy seed products.
