Became Law
Summary
Medal of Sacrifice creates a presidential honor for law enforcement officers and first responders killed in the line of duty. The law lays out who can receive the medal, forms a 12-member commission to manage awards and design, and specifies the medal's physical details and materials.
Show full summary
- Families of fallen officers receive a new presidential medal. The law directs an initial award to Deputies Ralph “Butch” Waller (Badge #8434), Ignacio “Dan” Diaz (Badge #7637), and Luis Paez (Badge #3882) and requires the names be engraved on the reverse.
- Eligibility covers local, state, tribal, territorial, and Federal law enforcement officers and first responders killed in the line of duty. Anyone with an official finding of wrongdoing is ineligible unless the Commission reviews the case and makes a final determination.
- The Commission on Medal of Sacrifice is made up of 12 presidential appointees who must be named within 150 days and serve five-year terms, with up to two terms allowed. The unpaid Commission advises on design and presentation, promotes the award, handles eligibility reviews, and may be dissolved when the President finds its work complete.
The Act defines the medal's design and materials in detail, including Silver Ag925 with 24k gold vermeil, a weight of about 63 grams, a 2.25 inch diameter, 2.5 micron vermeil plating, and a ribbon colored Azure or Gules depending on the fallen hero.
