Show full summary
- Families: Parents and caregivers would receive clear materials on early signs of pediatric liver disease and information about the option and safety of living liver donation.
- State newborn-screening programs: GAO would study the cost-effectiveness of adding direct-bilirubin to newborn panels for biliary atresia and other cholestatic diseases to inform state screening decisions.
- Transplant patients and equity advocates: GAO would review federally funded efforts to improve early detection and treatment and report trends in pediatric liver-transplant wait-list mortality by geography, race, insurance, diagnosis, and illness severity. The GAO report on that study would be due within one year of enactment.
- Program delivery and oversight: HHS would develop materials through the Health Resources and Services Administration with CDC input and could share them via existing cancer-control and organ-donation campaigns. GAO would also report on the education program’s results within three years of program start. No additional funds are authorized for the public-education program.
