Southern Arizona Protection Act

Sponsored By: Representative Gosar, Paul A. [R-AZ-9]

Introduced

Summary

Ends the Ironwood Forest National Monument and blocks future Antiquities Act monument designations in that mapped area unless Congress explicitly authorizes them. This bill would nullify Presidential Proclamation 7320 and remove the monument designation for the area shown on the June 12, 2000 map. It would also prohibit any new or expanded national monument in that mapped area under the Antiquities Act unless Congress gives express permission. The measure would not authorize new funding or programs and shifts authority over monument designations in that area to Congress.

End Ironwood monument and block new ones

If enacted, this bill would cancel Presidential Proclamation 7320 of June 9, 2000, which created the Ironwood Forest National Monument. Monument status for the area shown on the June 12, 2000 map would end. The President would not be able to create or expand a monument in that mapped area unless Congress approves it. Local landowners and businesses could face fewer federal land-use limits. Conservation groups, tribes, and recreation users could lose federal protections there.
