Sponsored By: Representative Vindman, Eugene Simon [D-VA-7]
Introduced
Summary
Keeps telework options for federal employees who are military spouses. The Support Military Families Act would exempt executive branch employees who are spouses of members of the armed forces from any requirement to return to full-time in-person work if they were eligible to telework before January 20, 2025. It would also require the Comptroller General to report within 180 days of enactment on how many employees this affects, their average one-way commute in miles, and the estimated economic impact of forcing in-person work, including costs to fill vacancies and lost productivity. The bill uses the terms "armed forces" and "civil service" as defined in 5 U.S.C. 2101.

Telework protection for military spouses
If enacted, this bill would let certain federal employees keep teleworking instead of returning to full-time in-person work. You would be covered only if you are an executive-branch employee and the spouse of a member of the armed forces. The rule would apply only if you were eligible to telework or remote work before January 20, 2025. It would override any law, rule, or regulation that requires a return to the office. The Comptroller General would have 180 days after enactment to report to the House Oversight Committee and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and publish the report. The report would list the total number of affected employees, their average commute distance in miles, and estimated economic costs of forcing in-person work.
