Designating November 7 of each year as ''Shwachman Diamond Syndrome Awareness Day''.
Sponsored By: Representative Kean, Thomas H. [R-NJ-7]
Introduced
Summary
Shwachman‑Diamond Syndrome Awareness Day. This bill would designate November 7 each year to boost public understanding and promote research and support for people affected by the rare genetic disorder Shwachman‑Diamond syndrome. The resolution describes SDS as a heritable condition that primarily harms the bone marrow, pancreas, and skeleton. It notes about 2,000 Americans live with SDS and it appears in roughly 1 in 80,000 newborns. Infants usually show symptoms by 4 to 6 months, including low white blood cell counts, pancreatic insufficiency, growth and skeletal problems, and higher risks of serious blood disorders. The text says SDS is underdiagnosed, shortens life expectancy by more than 30 years, and that increased awareness and coordinated research and care could improve diagnosis and outcomes.
