Shorter ambulance distance for rural Medicare

If enacted, Medicare ambulance rules in mountainous areas or where only secondary roads exist would change. Starting January 1, 2026, a 15-mile drive standard could apply for those ambulance services. Some hospitals that are Critical Access Hospitals as of enactment could be treated as meeting the 15-mile rule. They must show they met it at their last CAH certification, and deeming only applies if a new nearby facility is 10 to 15 miles away after enactment. The Secretary would have to issue rules to implement this within one year of enactment.
